watching kids practice writing their abc's. especially when they look to the board after each letter to see what comes next.

You have your work cut out for you. You will have them jumping through hoops in know time.
Are you teaching them cursive this year? That's what they're doing in John David's class. It just seems crazy to be doing that in first grade!
